World Series Game 3 TV Ratings Were Second-Lowest Ever

Game 3 of the World Series between the Giants and Rangers had the earliest start time in 23 years in an effort to draw more younger viewers. It ended up being the second-lowest-rated World Series broadcast ever.

Saturday night’s 4-2 Rangers win garnered a 6.7 rating for FOX, down from a 9.1 in last year’s Yankees-Phillies Game 3.

The only World Series game to register lower among viewers was at the other extreme as far as start time goes. Game 3 of the 2008 series between the Rays and Phillies didn’t start until after 10 p.m. ET because of rain and drew a 6.1 rating.

The first pitch for Game 3 came at 7 p.m. ET — 6 p.m. local time in Texas and 4 p.m. in San Francisco. It was the earliest start since Game 6 of the 1987 World Series.

Going up against college football on television, Saturday’s game saw viewership numbers drop off considerably from the first two games of this World Series. Game 1 drew an 8.9 rating and Game 2 tallied an 8.5.

The rating number represents the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program.

Pat Burrell Benched by Giants for Game 4

October 31, 2010

Pat BurrellARLINGTON, Texas — Slumping slugger Pat Burrell, who has struck out in half of his postseason at-bats, was not in the Giants lineup for Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday night.

Manager Bruce Bochy instead put Nate Schieroltz in right, moving Cody Ross to left field. Bochy said that Burrell would get the day off to “clear his head” and he’d be back in the lineup against Cliff Lee in Game 5.

“If we have someone who’s not quite seeing the ball, we give him a break,” Bochy said, adding that, “This will give Pat a chance to work on some things and get his timing back. I expect to see him out there again tomorrow.”

Bochy also changed his designated hitter. Instead of Pablo Sandoval, who went hitless in three at-bats to continue his poor postseason on Saturday, Bochy put Aubrey Huff at designated hitter and Travis Ishikawa at first base.

The only problem with that lineup is that if the Giants need to pinch-hit for Ishikawa, a left-handed hitter, they will have trouble covering first base. Either they’ll move Huff there, losing the DH, or they’ll have to put Sandoval there. They also could put Buster Posey at first and put Eli Whiteside behind the plate.

Rangers’ Beleaguered Bullpen Puts Out Fire This Time

ARLINGTON, Texas — Who replaced the torches with baseballs and put them in the hands of Texas Rangers relievers?

Thankfully for the 106th World Series, someone straightened these guys out.

A Rangers bullpen that put up an ERA of 18.56 in Games 1 and 2 retired all four batters it faced Saturday, which locked up a 4-2 victory in Game 3 and kept the San Francisco Giants from turning this Fall Classic into a laugher.

“We hadn’t performed like we are capable of, but we knew we were capable of it,” said Darren O’Day, one of the torch-wielders, who got a big final out of the eighth inning.

Baseball Aims for Families With Early Start to World Series Game 3

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas — Baseball was proud of itself for starting Game 3 of the World Series at 6 o’clock Saturday, its earliest start for the so-called Fall Classic in 23 years. The game ended before 10 p.m. Eastern time, which improved the chances that boys and girls watched the whole game.

“We’ve gotta have the children,” said Charles Steinberg, a senior advisor to commissioner Bud Selig. “Ours is the family game.”

When Texas Rangers pitcher Colby Lewis threw a strike at 6 p.m. CT Saturday, it was the earliest first pitch in a World Series since Game 6 in 1987 between the Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals.

“It shows that baseball is listening to families who are asking to help make sure their kids can watch the game,” Steinberg said.
