CC Sabathia Wants to Get Back to Normal After Game 1 Boost From Teammates

ARLINGTON, Texas — The only thing CC Sabathia would like more than to finally pitch on normal rest in Game 5 of the American League Championship series is if his next start comes on 11 days’ rest.

Because that would mean the Yankees swept the Rangers and were off until Game 1 of the World Series.

“I’ll take it in four,” Sabathia said. “Definitely.”

This series smells like a sweep after the Yankees crushed the Rangers’ spirits with Friday’s comeback from a five-run deficit that was Sabathia’s responsibility.

If Texas can win a game, Sabathia gets his second choice.

“I am looking forward to being able to throw my regular bullpen (session),” he said, “and be in kind of a normal situation heading into my next start.”

Facing Phil Hughes Could Right Twins’ Lefty-Heavy Offense

NEW YORK — The last time the Twins saw Phil Hughes, he was a struggling reliever.

This time, Hughes will start Saturday’s Game 3 of the AL Division Series for the Yankees, with a chance to end Minnesota’s season.

Facing Hughes might be the Twins’ first break in the series. The Yankees started lefties CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte in the first two games, and Minnesota’s key left-handed hitters — Joe Mauer, Jim Thome and Jason Kubel — all fared much better this year against righties.

Added to that, Hughes was less effective at Yankee Stadium (4.66 ERA) than on the road (3.47 ERA).

“Righty or lefty, I don’t think it matters either way,” Thome said Friday. “You’ve still got to have a game plan and go out and execute it.”

Playoff Pulse: It’s in the Manuel

Ryan MadsonPlayoff Pulse is our morning rundown of the night that was and the night that will be during the MLB postseason.

Looking Forward …

Much will be made in the lead-up to Game 6 of another Yankees starter — Andy Pettitte — going on three days’ rest, assuming of course that that is officially announced Tuesday. Of course, there wasn’t much of a choice for Joe Girardi.

The Phillies do have some interesting options as they head back to New York. Game 6 starter Pedro Martinez was the easy part, but you can’t expect him to go all nine innings, so, especially if the Phillies have a lead, what happens then?
